Overview

Riders with a 3x8 SRAM-equipped mountain bike or hybrid who need replacement shifters, and workshops refreshing an older trail or commuter bike.

The SRAM X4 Trigger Shifter Set gives you a 3-speed left shifter and an 8-speed right shifter, the classic setup on entry-level mountain bikes, kids' bikes and hybrids. Each one uses SRAM's two-lever trigger layout, so you push one lever to shift up and the other to shift down.

Rear shifting runs on SRAM's 1:1 Actuation, which keeps the cable pull even across the whole cassette for accurate, consistent shifts. A gear indicator window on each shifter shows which gear you're in, and each shifter has its own clamp, so they work alongside whatever brake levers are on the bike.

Inner gear cables come in the box. The set weighs about 260 g for the pair, and it's an easy swap when old shifters get tired, sticky or broken in a crash.

1:1 Actuation

Accurate rear shifting that copes with grime and cable stretch.

Technology

1:1 Actuation

SRAM's rear shifting system where every unit of cable pulled moves the derailleur the same amount, so shifts stay accurate even when cables get dirty.

Two-lever trigger

The same two-lever layout SRAM uses on its dearer shifters: one lever to shift up, one to shift down, both worked with your thumb and finger.

Who it's for

Great for

  • Replacing worn or broken shifters on a 3x8 SRAM bike
  • Entry-level mountain bikes and hybrids
  • Workshop rebuilds of older trail bikes

Maybe not for

  • Bikes with Shimano rear derailleurs (the 1:1 cable pull won't index correctly)
  • 1x, 2x, 7-speed or 9-speed drivetrains
  • Bikes using MatchMaker brake lever mounts

Check your rear derailleur first: the right shifter needs a SRAM 1:1 (ESP) 8-speed rear derailleur. The left shifter is for a triple front derailleur.

Worth knowing

Check the rear derailleur before you buy

SRAM 1:1 shifters only index properly with SRAM 1:1 rear derailleurs such as X4 or X5. If your bike has a Shimano rear derailleur, you need Shimano-compatible shifters instead. Not sure? Send us a photo of your derailleur and we'll tell you.

Fit new housing with new shifters

Fresh cables and housing make the biggest difference to shift quality. Fit the shifters, run new inner cables, then set the high and low limit screws and fine tune the indexing with the barrel adjuster.
