Riders building or converting a single-speed bike whose frame has no way to adjust chain tension.
This single-speed chain tensioner has a black alloy plate and a black roller. It works with both nutted and quick-release axles, so it suits single-speed bikes with either type of rear axle fixing.
The roller takes up slack in the chain, which is handy when a frame's dropouts give you no other way to set chain tension. It is for single-speed drivetrains only, not geared bikes.

Great for
Maybe not for
For single-speed drivetrains, with nutted or quick-release rear axles. Before fitting, check that the roller lines up with your chain and that the plate clears the frame, chainstay and tyre.
Leave a little slack
Set the roller so the chain has a little up-and-down play rather than running drum-tight, because too much tension wears the chain, sprockets and hub bearings. After fitting, turn the cranks by hand to check the chain runs smoothly, and make sure the axle nuts or quick release are fully tight.
