Ideal for home mechanics, travelling riders and workshop users servicing Shimano HOLLOWTECH II or 2-piece cranksets.
The Shimano HOLLOWTECH II crank arm tool is the small dedicated tool for installing and removing the crank arm fixing bolt / preload cap used on Shimano HOLLOWTECH II and 2-PIECE CRANKSET systems. If you're servicing a Shimano crank, changing a bottom bracket or swapping cranksets, this is the right tool for that specific step rather than trying to improvise with pliers or a coin.
In practice, this tool is used to set bearing preload before the left crank arm pinch bolts are tightened. That matters because the cap is only there to take out play in the system; once preload is set, the pinch bolts do the real clamping work. Using the proper tool helps you engage the cap evenly, avoid damage to the plastic bolt, and makes it much easier to remove a cap that has been snugged down properly.
For most home mechanics, this is one of those small workshop essentials that saves hassle every time a Shimano two-piece crank comes off. It's also tiny enough to keep in a toolbox or travel kit. If your bike runs a Shimano HOLLOWTECH II crankset across road, MTB, gravel or many e-bike applications, this is the straightforward tool that matches the job.
Dedicated HOLLOWTECH II fit
Made for Shimano HOLLOWTECH II and 2-PIECE CRANKSET crank arm fixing bolts, so you get the correct interface for installation and removal.
Sets preload correctly
Lets you adjust the crank cap to remove side play before tightening the left crank arm pinch bolts.
Helps protect the fixing bolt
A proper full-engagement fit reduces the chance of slipping, marking or damaging the preload cap compared with improvised tools.
Useful across Shimano categories
Widely used with Shimano road, MTB, gravel and many e-bike HOLLOWTECH II cranksets, so one small tool covers plenty of bikes.
Compact workshop essential
Tiny and easy to store, making it a practical addition to a home bench, toolbox or ride-support kit.
Low-torque hand use
This job only needs light preload, so the tool is designed for a simple hand-tight adjustment rather than heavy force.
General
HOLLOWTECH II
Built to work with Shimano HOLLOWTECH II and 2-PIECE CRANKSET systems, so you can install or remove the crank arm fixing bolt with the correct dedicated tool for the job.
Great for
Maybe not for
No sizing to choose. Compatibility is the key point: this tool is for the HOLLOWTECH II / 2-piece crank arm fixing bolt or preload cap, not for the bottom bracket cups themselves. You'll also typically need 5 mm hex tools for the left crank arm pinch bolts, and Shimano preload should be set lightly rather than overtightened.
vs Park Tool BBT-10.2
A direct alternative crank cap tool for the same job. The Park Tool option is positioned more as a workshop-grade equivalent, while the Shimano tool keeps things simple and compact.
vs Pedro's Crank Adjusting Cap Driver
Another equivalent tool for Shimano Hollowtech II adjusting caps. It's aimed at the same preload-cap task, with a more tool-oriented workshop presentation.
vs BBB CrankGrip BTL-102
A Hollowtech II cap tool aimed at removing the dust cover/adjusting cap on Shimano systems. It covers the same basic compatibility area for buyers looking beyond Shimano-branded tools.
This is not your bottom bracket cup tool
A common mix-up is buying a HOLLOWTECH II cup tool when you actually need the crank cap tool. TL-FC16 is for the left-side preload cap/fixing bolt, not for removing or installing the external bottom bracket cups.
Use it before the pinch bolts are fully tightened
On Shimano two-piece cranks, the preload cap is there to take out play first. After that, the left crank arm pinch bolts do the real clamping, so don't rely on the cap to hold the arm on by itself.
Light preload is the goal
This cap only needs a very light setting. If you crank it down too hard, you can add drag and shorten bearing life instead of improving anything.
Worth having even for occasional servicing
Because the tool is so small and specific, it's one of those cheap workshop items that saves frustration every time you remove or refit a Shimano crank.
