Road riders moving to clipless, or anyone after a tough, affordable SPD-SL pedal for training.
The Shimano PD-RS500 uses Shimano's SPD-SL three-bolt road cleat, the same system found on its race pedals. Shimano set the spring tension lighter and gave it a larger entry target, so it's easy to find the pedal and clip in at the lights.
An extra-wide platform spreads your pedalling effort, and a stainless steel body plate protects the pedal from cleat wear. Yellow SM-SH11 cleats with a few degrees of float come in the box.
Note these are SPD-SL road pedals, not the two-bolt SPD mountain system. You'll need road shoes with a three-bolt pattern.
SPD-SL road cleat
Three-bolt system used across Shimano's road range.
Easy engagement
Lighter spring and a bigger entry target.
Wide platform
Stable, efficient power transfer.
Cleats included
Yellow SM-SH11 cleats with float.
Pedal
In the box
Light action spring
Lower spring tension than Shimano's race pedals, so clipping in and out is easier for riders new to clipless.
Stainless body plate
A stainless steel plate on the platform resists wear from the cleat and reduces flex.
Great for
Maybe not for
Needs a road shoe with the three-bolt cleat pattern. Grease the pedal threads when fitting, and remember the left pedal is reverse threaded.
Start with low tension
Wind the release tension right down for your first rides and practise clipping out on grass or against a wall. Yellow cleats have float, so knees can move naturally; we can help line them up if you like.
