Riders fitting or replacing the front brake on an entry-level mountain bike who want a matched, easy-to-service hydraulic set.
This is the front set: a BR-MT410 two-piston caliper from Shimano's Deore range with a BL-MT401 two-finger lever for the right-hand side and a black 1000 mm hose. The lever borrows its sleek look from Shimano's racing components, has an anodised alloy blade and adjusts down to a 75 mm reach for smaller hands.
Shimano describes the caliper as giving superior modulation, with quick piston retraction, and it comes with B05S-RX resin pads. It mounts to a post-mount fork, runs on Shimano mineral oil and has one-way bleeding at the caliper and funnel bleeding at the lever.
Complete front set
Caliper, right-hand lever and 1000 mm hose together, so the parts are matched.
Smooth, controllable feel
Shimano's caliper gives superior modulation with quick piston retraction.
Short-reach lever
The anodised alloy blade adjusts by tool down to a 75 mm reach.
Clean servicing
One-way bleeding at the caliper, funnel bleeding at the lever and Shimano mineral oil.
Caliper (BR-MT410)
Lever and hose (BL-MT401)
Great for
Maybe not for
Takes 160, 180 and 203 mm rotors (rotor not included). Shimano's SM-RT30, SM-RT54 and SM-RT56 rotors are for resin pads only. This is the front set with the right-hand lever and a 1000 mm hose.
Mineral oil only
The BR-MT410 system uses Shimano mineral oil. Never top it up or bleed it with DOT brake fluid, because it damages the seals. Brakes are a safety part, so have the set fitted and bled by a qualified mechanic.
