Riders on 9-speed mountain, trekking and e-bikes who want an easy low gear for climbing.
The Shimano Alivio CS-HG400-9 is a 9-speed cassette with HYPERGLIDE shifting and close steps between the main sprockets for smooth, comfortable pedalling. This version runs 11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30-34T.
The sprockets are nickel plated and drilled to save weight, with a nickel plated steel lockring. Shimano rates the HG400 as meeting its durability requirements for E-MTB use, so it's a tough choice for e-bikes as well as regular bikes.
With a 34T biggest sprocket, the 11-34T is the pick for hilly commutes, touring with luggage and mountain biking, where a low gear keeps you turning the pedals.

Great for
Maybe not for
Fits a standard Shimano HG 8, 9 or 10-speed freehub body. On an 11-speed road freehub body you need a 1.85 mm spacer behind the cassette. Needs a rear derailleur rated for a 34T largest sprocket. Use a 9-speed chain.
Cassette and chain together
A worn chain will skip on a new cassette. Check chain wear before you fit this, and replace the chain at the same time if it's past the limit.
Check your derailleur
A 34T sprocket needs a rear derailleur that can handle it, usually a medium or long cage mountain derailleur. You may also need a longer chain when moving up from a smaller cassette.
