Pushing back disc brake pistons

Overview

Riders who maintain their own hydraulic disc brakes and change pads at home.

When disc pads wear, or the lever gets pulled with no rotor in, the pistons creep out and new pads will not fit. The PRO Brake Piston Lever is designed to push pistons back and separate the pads inside the caliper, gently and evenly.

It suits all disc brake systems and is shaped to work without damaging pistons or pads. The dual compound grip makes it comfortable to use and gives good control when a piston is sticky.

Works with all disc brake systems.

Who it's for

Great for

  • Changing disc brake pads
  • Resetting pistons after a wheel swap
  • Freeing slightly sticky pistons

Maybe not for

  • Rebuilding calipers or replacing seals
  • Rim brakes

Suits hydraulic and mechanical disc calipers from any brand.

Worth knowing

Push both sides back evenly

With the wheel out, push the pistons back fully, ideally with old pads still in to protect the piston faces. If one piston keeps sticking out, clean around it before pushing again. Pump the lever a few times before riding.
