Overview

Kids around 4 to 7 years old who are confident on a bike and ready for gears and some off-road riding.

The Orbea MX 20 Team is built for kids who want to ride everywhere, from the school run to the local trails. The aluminium frame and rigid alloy fork keep it light, which makes a huge difference for small riders, and the parts are sized for young hands and legs.

Orbea deliberately leaves off a suspension fork here. At this size most forks barely move under a light child and just add weight, so wide 20 x 2.20 Kenda Booster tyres do the cushioning instead and add plenty of grip on dirt.

A Shimano Altus 1x8-speed drivetrain gives a proper range of gears for hills with only one shifter to learn, and simple alloy V-brakes are easy to adjust and maintain. This bike is in the purple and mint colourway.

Technology

Rigid fork by design

Orbea skips a suspension fork on this model to save weight, since forks this small rarely work well for light kids.

Who it's for

Great for

  • Kids about 4 to 7 years old
  • Dirt paths, parks and easy trails
  • Kids ready to learn gears

Maybe not for

  • Kids who haven't mastered pedalling and braking yet
  • Rough, rocky trails where suspension would help a bigger rider

Orbea's MX 20 range generally suits kids around 4 to 7 years old. Your child should be able to stand over the top tube with both feet flat. Bring them in for a test ride and we'll set the saddle height.

Worth knowing

Tyre pressure for kids

Light riders don't need much pressure. Running the Kenda tyres a bit softer, within the range on the sidewall, gives more grip and comfort, which matters more on a bike without suspension.

Teach the gears early

Show them to ease off the pedals slightly as they shift and to change down before a hill. The single shifter makes it easy to learn.
