What happened to BikeExchange in Australia
BikeExchange was one of the main places Australians bought and sold bikes online, with listings from bike shops and private sellers. In April 2025 the company announced it would pause its Australian operations, and the Australian marketplace stopped at the end of the financial year, on 30 June 2025. It linked the decision to stronger growth in its bigger markets in North America and Europe, where it continues to operate.
Its Australian site, bikeexchange.com.au, now shows a "Returning soon" page headed "Australia's cycling marketplace is coming home." When we checked on 1 October 2026 it gave no relaunch date and had no waiting list. Its sites for the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria are still running.

Where to buy a bike now
There is no single replacement. The right option depends on whether you want a new bike, a used one, or a shop's help with sizing and servicing.
| Option | What you will find | How you pay | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow Jersey | In-stock bikes, parts and gear from bike shops, and riders' used bikes, in one search | Checkout through Stripe | Seeing shop stock and used bikes side by side |
| Your local bike shop | New bikes, ex-demo bikes and trade-ins, with fitting and servicing | In store or on the shop's own site | Advice, sizing and help after you buy |
| Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree | Lots of used bikes from private sellers | Arranged between you and the seller | Cheap local bikes, if you know what to check |
| eBay | New and used bikes and parts from sellers around Australia | Through eBay | Parts, and bikes from further away |
| Online bike brands | New and ex-demo bikes sold direct and delivered | On the brand's own site | New bikes at a fixed price, if you can size yourself |
Buying used? Our used bike checklist covers what to inspect before you pay and how to check a bike is not stolen. If you are unsure of your size, start with the bike size guide.
Where to sell a bike now
Most private sales still happen on general classifieds, where the messages, payment and handover are up to you. A bike marketplace puts your listing in front of people who are looking for bikes, and takes care of payment.
- Yellow Jersey: creating a listing is free. Take a photo and AI drafts the title, specs and description; you set the price and it is live in about two minutes. Buyers pay through Stripe, the money is released to you once the sale is complete, and a small fee applies only when it sells. You choose local pickup, postage anywhere in Australia, or both. Sell your bike.
- Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree: free to list and widely used, but you handle the messages, the payment and meeting the buyer yourself.
- A bike shop trade-in: quick if you are buying another bike from the same shop, though you will usually get less than in a private sale.
- eBay: national reach. Selling fees apply when your item sells, so check the current rates before you list.
Whichever you choose, price against similar bikes currently for sale, and state the size, model year and condition clearly. Good photos in daylight sell bikes faster than a long description.
For bike shops that sold through BikeExchange
Many shops used BikeExchange to show their stock to riders beyond their own website. On Yellow Jersey, a shop connects Lightspeed and its in-stock products appear online automatically, with stock levels kept up to date. The shop also gets a storefront page that can serve as its website.
It is free for 6 months, with no setup costs. See how it works for bike shops.
